PTE Test Day in Dhaka: What to Bring and What to Expect

Check-in, the locker, the noisy room, the order of the parts, and the small things that unsettle first-time candidates at Dhaka test centres.

Almost nobody is surprised by the questions on test day. Plenty of people are surprised by the room. This is what the day actually looks like at a Dhaka test centre, in order.

The one thing you must bring

Your passport. For international test-takers in Bangladesh this is the accepted identification, and the name on it must match your booking exactly — spelling, order, middle names, everything.

A national ID card will not do. A photocopy will not do. An expired passport will not do. A booking under "Md Rahman" when the passport says "Mohammad Rahman" will not do, and the fee is not refunded.

Check this the day you book, not the night before. It is the single most common reason candidates are turned away in Bangladesh, and it is entirely preventable.

Before you leave

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before your slot. With Dhaka traffic, treat the stated arrival time as a deadline rather than a target.
  • Eat properly. It is a two-hour test with no break, and concentration in the Listening part at the end is noticeably affected by this.
  • Use the bathroom before check-in. You may leave during the test, but the clock does not stop.
  • Do not take caffeine beyond your normal amount. Jitter hurts Speaking more than tiredness does.

Check-in

Expect this to take longer than you think. Staff will verify your passport, take a photograph, capture a biometric scan — typically palm vein — and ask for a signature. Several candidates are processed at once and queues form.

Then everything you brought goes into a locker. Phone, watch, wallet, keys, bag, notes, water. You cannot access the locker during the test.

You are given an erasable notepad and a pen at your desk. Do not write on it before the test begins — it will be treated as a rule breach.

The room

This is the part that unsettles first-time candidates, and it is worth preparing for mentally.

Everyone in the room is taking the test at their own pace, and everyone speaks into their microphone at whatever point they have reached. So while you are reading a passage in silence, the person beside you is describing a graph out loud, and the person behind you is repeating a sentence.

Your headset microphone is directional and designed for this. It will not pick up your neighbour. What it will pick up is you raising your voice to compete, which does not help.

Speak at your normal volume and ignore the room. The most useful preparation for this is to do some of your speaking practice somewhere noisy, rather than in a silent bedroom, so test day is not the first time you have had to concentrate through other voices.

The order of the test

  1. Microphone check and the unscored Personal Introduction.
  2. Speaking and Writing, roughly 76 to 84 minutes.
  3. Reading, roughly 23 to 30 minutes.
  4. Listening, roughly 31 to 39 minutes.

The order is fixed and you cannot return to a part once it closes. There is an optional short break offered between parts — take it. Ten minutes of standing up meaningfully changes how the Listening part goes.

The Personal Introduction

Unscored. It does not affect your result at all. Some institutions can view it, so say something sensible, but do not spend preparation time on it and do not let it rattle you.

What it is genuinely useful for is checking your microphone position and your volume. Use it for that.

Pacing yourself through two hours

The honest difficulty of PTE is not any single question. It is sustaining accuracy for two hours with no break you did not ask for.

Three things help. Take the offered break. Sit upright rather than hunched, because posture affects breathing and breathing affects fluency. And accept that Listening comes last, when you are tired — which is why practising Write from Dictation at the end of a long session matters more than practising it fresh.

Common questions

Can i take water into the test room

No. Water, like everything else you brought, goes in the locker. Drink before check-in.

What if my headset or computer has a problem

Raise your hand and wait for an invigilator. Do not try to fix it yourself and do not keep going hoping it resolves. Technical issues are handled by the centre and reported to Pearson, and you want that on record at the time rather than afterwards.

Can i leave the room during the test

You may, but the clock keeps running, and you will be re-verified on your way back in. Unless it is unavoidable, use the scheduled break instead.

How early is too early to arrive

There is no such thing in Dhaka. Arriving an hour early and waiting is far better than the alternative, and you will start the test calmer.

What should i do the night before

Sleep. Not a last practice session. Marginal revision the night before a two-hour concentration test is a bad trade against being rested, and the Listening part at the end is where you will pay for it.

After the test

Results typically arrive in about two days, by email, in your Pearson account. From there you can send your score report to institutions free and as often as you like, for the two years the score stays valid.

Do not rebook the same week on the strength of a bad feeling. Candidates are consistently poor judges of their own performance, and a second attempt without a changed plan tends to produce a similar score.
